Caffeine Boosts Performance, For Some

The good news from researchers at Dublin City University is that yes, coffee does enhance athletic performance. The bad news is that it does so mainly for people who don’t ordinarily drink coffee or tea. Science Daily reports on the research, which gave caffeinated gum equal to two strong cups of coffee to 18 male athletes and had them run ten sprints. It also had the athletes run without the benefit of gum. The researchers found that athletes who ordinarily drank little coffee or tea got the biggest bang from the caffeinated gum. Among those who drank three or more cups of coffee a day, however, there was almost no boost from the gum. In fact, their performance declined over the course of the ten repeated sprints.
