What weight-loss programs work the best long-term? Does the strategy a dieter uses when paying for things programs like Nutisystem, Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, Atkins, or any other well-known brands keep the weight off for years?
Eurek Alert! reported on a study conducted at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus that shows “low-cost, non-profit weight loss program” is what works best for people.
Study author, Nia S. Mitchell, M.D., MPH, with the Division of General Internal Medicine at the Anschutz Health and Wellness Center at CU Anschutz, explained one of the main reasons why weight-loss programs don’t provide the type of long-term results dieters need.
“We know that people lose weight and then gain it back. In this case, we found that people who renewed their annual membership in the program lost a clinically significant amount of weight and kept it off.”
Significant clinical weight-loss is defined as “losing 5 percent or more of one’s body weight, because weight-related medical conditions, such as diabetes, can improve with that level of weight loss.”
The study was based predominately on “Take Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS),” which is a national, low-cost, weight loss program taken by peer volunteers — and costs $92 a year. It’s far more affordable than other weight-loss programs people pay for.
75,000 participants were part of the study. It focused on those who renewed their annual memberships consecutively for up to 7 years. 50 percent of them had clinically significant weight loss in their first year in TOPS, with 62 percent of those maintaining 7 years after staying with the program all that time.
The study illustrated the first “real-world weight changes and program retention for 7 years.” It also proved that renewed memberships was a big factor in sustaining significant weight loss for 7 years, and that the program is low-cost and peer-led — which means it’s more accessible for people trying to lose the pounds.
Mitchell shares what people need in order for their weight-loss programs to be successful.
“Despite decades of obesity research two issues remain elusive in weight management: significant, long-term weight-loss maintenance and widely accessible programs. To reverse this epidemic we need to find programs that are effective at weight loss and maintenance, low-cost, and easy to implement and disseminate widely.”
Not long ago Weight-Loss Programs ranked their “Top 10 Diet Programs.” They were Diet.com, eDiets.com, Jillian Michaels, Denise Austin, Weight Watchers, South Beach Diet, Sonoma Diet, Biggest Loser Club, Zone Diet, and Diet-to-Go.
