Fans of diet pills beware — just how much caffeine is in them? Chris Wilcock found out the hard way, via a deadly heart attack on April 6, 2015. Wilcock had ingested a currently unknown quantity of the T5 diet pill which contains high amounts of caffeine before suffering a heart attack. He had only just started taking the diet pills.
Chris Wilcock, from Darwen, Lancashire, decided to take the T5 pills after friends called him fat — even though he weighed in at only 12 stone (168 pounds or 76 kilograms). While it has yet to be revealed just how many tablets he took leading up to his heart attack, toxicology reports are now suggesting his body contained caffeine to the equivalent of 300 cups of coffee. As a result of these findings, his fiancee, Heather Thompson, wants the pills banned.
After ingesting the diet pills, Wilcock complained of feeling unwell to Thompson, who went on to call an ambulance.
“He said he wasn’t feeling well and said he had taken some T5s. I called 111. They said they were sending an ambulance. Chris was saying he was going to be all right but he started going funny. I had to get him dressed. He sat on the edge of the bed and I cuddled him until the ambulance arrived.”
Chris Wilcox had suffered a heart attack and was pronounced dead at the Royal Blackburn Hospital in England. He was 45 and the father of three children. The T5 pills, though freely available for as little as £25 (approximately $38) online, have been implicated in at least one other heart attack death. Amateur boxer Lance Ferguson-Prayogg, 32, suffered a heart attack just before a “white-collar fight” last June. He died in hospital two days later, suffering not only a heart attack but kidney failure as well. After an inquest into the death of Ferguson-Prayogg, the coroner deemed T5 pills as “extremely dangerous” and warned others against their use.
Currently, an inquest is also being held into the heart attack and subsequent death of Chris Wilcox. Already, the coroner has ruled Wilcock’s death as a result of caffeine toxicity and has suggested an investigation be started into the T5 diet pills. Jake Berry, an MP for the Darwen and Rossendale areas, has asked for an outright ban on the product in order to ensure no one else dies of a heart attack brought on by these pills.
