Dr. Ian Crozier probably knows the worst of the Ebola virus. Eye infections can still linger even for months after being “cured,” and one of the oddest side effects is that his eyes turned a new color.
In a related report by the Inquisitr, to give you an idea how long the Ebola virus can linger, one man had recovered five months ago only to spread the Ebola virus via sex. The World Health Organization (WHO) is also tackling a new health problem they are calling “post-Ebola syndrome.”
The Ebola virus has infected more than 26,000 people since December 2013 in West Africa. As of last week, WHO reported the number of new Ebola virus cases dropping to their lowest total this year in Guinea and Sierra Leone. Liberia, which faced the worst of the Ebola outbreak with 4,700 deaths, also plans to declare the outbreak to be completely over.
Unfortunately, the Ebola virus can manage to survive in the human body even after it is undetectable in the blood. As noted above, the deadly virus is capable of surviving for several months while attached to semen. But now Dr. Ian Crozier has proven that an Ebola virus eye infection is fully possible even months after a victim has supposedly fully recovered from the virus.
Dr. Crozier contracted the Ebola virus back in September of 2014 while working with the World Health Organization in Sierra Leone. He was successfully treated at Emory University Hospital’s special Ebola unit in Atlanta. The New England Journal of Medicine reports that Crozier developed an inflammation and very high blood pressure in his left eye.
“One month later, 14 weeks after the diagnosis of EVD, he presented with an acute onset of redness, blurred vision with halos, pain, and photophobia in the left eye. Visual acuity was measured at 20/15 in the right eye and 20/20 in the left eye…. by 5 days after the onset of symptoms, visual acuity in the left eye was decreased to 20/60.”
The oddest result of the Ebola virus’ eye infection is that the doctor’s eye color turned from blue to green 10 days after the symptoms were first detected. Fortunately, the Ebola treatment was successful and when the tears and tissue surrounding the outside of his eye were tested, he was free of the Ebola virus. Doctors at Emory Hospital did also drain some fluid from his eye, and that did test positive for the Ebola virus, but they believe these Ebola eye infections easily will not cause another Ebola outbreak.
” It is reassuring that samples of conjunctivae and tears tested negative for EBOV, a finding that supports previous studies suggesting that patients who recover from EVD pose no risk of spreading the infection through casual contact.”
The bad news is that this Ebola virus eye infection is thought to be one of many. While Dr. Ian Crozier recovered quickly due to medical treatment, those in Africa may be suffering. As of this past week, the Ebola death toll has exceeded 11,000 people worldwide.
