Polygamous Men Five Times More Likely Of Suffering Heart Disease, Study Finds

While many men in the West dream of the prospect of having more than one wife legally, a new study has shown that men with more than one wife are five times more likely of suffering from heart disease.

Even though previous research showed that men who are married suffered from less stress in life in general, were more physically active and had a better diet, the new study has made some interesting revelations.

A cardiologist at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Dr Amin Daoulah, said,

There is evidence that married people have better overall health and longevity – but until now no study has assessed the effect of polygamy on cardiovascular health. Men who practice polygamy have up to four concurrent wives who can reside in the same or different regions but do not normally reside in the same house. Polygamy is practiced mainly in North and West Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia and Southeast Asia.

The new study, which was presented at the Asian Pacific Society of Cardiology Congress 2015, looked at the connection between coronary artery disease and the number of wives one has.

Meanwhile, Dr Daoulah added,

Polygamy may be more frequent in rural areas because it is more culturally acceptable and getting married at a young age is more common. Also there was a higher percentage of national citizens residing in rural areas compared to urban areas. Men with multiple wives have to be well supported financially, and although Saudis and Emirati people are supported by their governments, polygamists may need more than one income.

Interestingly, the study demonstrated that men who practiced polygamy had a 4.6-fold increased risk of coronary artery disease and a 3.5-fold increased risk of Left Main Disease – narrowing of the left main artery.

A former president of the Emirates Society of Cardiologists, Professor Michel Komajda, said, “We know that long-term stress in family life increases the risk of coronary heart disease and it would be interesting to see what effect polygamy had on wives.”
