Most people have heard the saying, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Recently a study was conducted by researchers from Dartmouth Medical School that proves an apple a day does not necessarily keep the doctor away. In fact, some people who eat an apple on a daily basis go to the doctor more often than people who don’t eat apples that often.

Chicago Tribune reports and makes it quite clear that no one is saying apples aren’t healthy and good for you, but apples alone don’t keep you from getting sick. Eating a variety of healthy foods is always better than relying on just one food to help you stay well.

Researchers took into account weight, race, education, and overall health issues for their apple-a-day study. More than 8,000 people over a three-year period were evaluated. The surprising results were published in JAMA Internal Medicine that people who eat an apple a day still have to go to the doctor sometimes. That’s because they might be eating unhealthy foods along with the apple.

The New York Daily News reported that while an apple a day doesn’t necessarily keep the doctor away, the study showed that an apple a day may often keep the pharmacist away. That’s because people who eat an apple a day are less likely to use prescription drugs.

“An apple a day keeps the doctor away” is a proverb that has been around since the 1800s. It probably originated because an apple is a fruit that is available all year long and has a long shelf life.

Even though we see several kinds of apples in our grocery store, it has been estimated that there are over 7,500 different varieties of apples worldwide. It is no doubt that an apple is a good source of vitamin C, vitamin A, calcium, and iron. One medium apple has about 100 calories, and it provides almost 20 percent of the daily recommended amount of fiber that our bodies need per day.

The bottom line about an apple is that the fruit is healthy, and it is a good food choice. Nutritionists agree with the study that an apple a day is not going to make a big difference, unless it is eaten along with other healthy foods. So, if you are an apple lover, continue to eat an apple a day. However, know that eating the apple will not keep you out of the doctor’s office, according to the apple-a-day study.
