A study conducted by researchers at the University of Birmingham in the U.K. determined that just 16 ounces of water 30 minutes before meals was enough to help with weight loss in obese adults. As reported by Web MD, researchers said that there needed to be bigger trials, but the research showed promise because of its simplicity.
“The beauty of these findings is in the simplicity. Just drinking a pint of water, three times a day, before your main meals may help reduce your weight,” says Dr. Helen Parretti, one of the study authors, in a statement. “When combined with brief instructions on how to increase your amount of physical activity and [get] on a healthy diet, this seems to help people to achieve some extra weight loss — at a moderate and healthy rate. It’s something that doesn’t take much work to integrate into our busy everyday lives.”
Researchers used 84 volunteers for the weight loss study that were referred by doctors. All were given weight management plans that covered healthy eating and exercise. The first group of 41 volunteers were given 16 ounces of water 30 minutes before each meal while the other 43 volunteers were asked to imagine being full after each meal. Those who drank water averaged 9.84 pounds lost.
Inquisitr previously reported that a low fat diet and healthy eating are both keys to weight loss. A low fat diet actually led to better fat loss results. Calorie restricted diets combined with exercise gave the best results.
In another study reported on by Action News Jacksonville, researchers discovered that when the gut microbes of someone whose diet is rich in fish oil is transplanted to someone whose diet is rich in lard, weight gain is slowed. Research author Robert Ceasar said researchers were surprised by the difference in energy content between fish oil and lard.
“We were surprised that the lard and the fish oil diet, despite having the same energy content and the same amount of dietary fiber–which is the primary energy source for the gut bacteria–resulted in fundamentally different gut microbiota communities and that the microbiota per se had such large effects on health.”
The study was done on mice using gut bacteria. Transplanting the gut bacteria not only helped to protect against weight gain, it also reduced inflammation.
As shown by the two studies on weight loss, simple changes in diet may be enough to help improve weight loss results. Further weight loss studies are necessary to confirm the results, but they do show promise for those looking to lose weight more easily.
