Eat Plants for Heart Health

One more thing a plant-based diet can do for you: lower the risk of heart disease. Researchers at Penn State are convinced of it, having found a clear association between diets that are low in sulfur amino acids and lower risk of heart disease. Sulfur amino acids are found mainly in protein rich foods, including meats, dairy, nuts and soy.

A Penn State news release reports that when researchers at the school examined the diets and blood biomarkers of more than 11,000 participants from a national study, the bloodwork showed that people who ate foods containing fewer sulfur amino acids tended to have a decreased risk for cardiometabolic disease. Wait there’s more: the researchers found that the average American consumes almost two and a half times more sulfur amino acids than the estimated average requirement.
