Museum Goers Live Longer

Want to add a few years to your life? Start visiting museums. A recent study by researchers at the University College London found that, even accounting for income, education level and mobility, people who go to museums or attend concerts just once or twice a year had a 14 percent reduced risk of dying during the study’s 14 year followup study. And those who visited a museum or the theatre once month had a 31 percent reduced risk of dying. The New York Times reports that the study, which was published in the BMJ, followed thousands of people over the age of 50, and noted that engaging in the arts can reduce loneliness, promote empathy and emotional intelligence, and keep people from becoming sedentary. The Times reports that a 2017 study by the National Endowment of the Arts found that Americans over 55 who did not create art or go to concerts, museums or plays reported higher rates of hypertension and cognitive decline than those who did.
