Your Body Is What You Think It Is, Even If You’re Wrong

If you think exercise is naturally hard for you, it probably will be hard. If you think you have the genes that make exercise a breeze, it will be a breeze. That’s the takeaway from research conducted at Stanford, which deliberately mislead people about their genetic predispositions. The New York Times reports that before doing exercise on a treadmill, a certain group of subjects were told that at DNA analysis had revealed that their bodies responded poorly to exercise and they had poor endurance. Even though that was, in most cases, false, people who were forewarned about their abilities tired more quickly than those who were not warned.  Next, the researchers conducted a similar misleading exercise with false news about a gene that made them feel less full after eating, or one that made them feel more full. Yes, you guessed it: those who were told that their genes made them feel full did feel full, and vice versa. One final note: all participants were told the truth about their genes at the end of the experiment.
