The clitoris is an important part of the anatomy, but one that historically has been shrouded in a bit of mystery. Did you know that the clitoris is the female equivalent to a penis (and that the internal gland is also made of similar erectile tissue)? Why they didn't teach it like that in health class, I just don't know, since it's a pretty crucial fact. According to Dr. Joshua D. Zuckerman, MD, FACS of Zuckerman Plastic Surgery and a board-certified plastic surgeon in NYC, the composition of the male foreskin and clitoral hood tissues are similar. Get to know the clitoris well with these 10 facts.
- The clitoris contains about 8,000 sensitive nerve endings. That's twice as many nerve endings as penis has!
- Clitoris stimulation may be important during sex. Fifty to 75 percent of those with vaginas who have orgasms need to have their clitoris stimulated in some way. Many are unable to have an orgasm through just vaginal penetration.
- A clitoral orgasm can be very powerful. It can be anywhere from between three and 16 contractions and last anywhere from 10 to 60 seconds.
- The clitoris is way longer than you think. It can be the the size of a zucchini and roughly the same size as a penis.
- The clitoris is the only organ in the female body whose sole job is to bring pleasure - thank you, clitoris, for existing!
- An enlarged clitoral hood can prevent someone from experiencing strong sexual sensations and is a reason some might say yes to getting clitoroplasty, a surgery that can alter the clitoris.
- A good portion of your clitoris is unable to be seen by the human eye. Three-fourths (which can be about four inches) of your clitoris is actually inside of your body.
- The clitoris goes beyond the outer portion, also known as the glands. The entire clitoris is about 0.5 to 2 centimeters long, and the external glands are less than 1 centimeter. The internal clitoris is made up of bulbous internal extensions and wings on either side.

- There is such thing as a clitoris erection, and it happens when you are turned on. As arousal occurs, everything becomes even more enlarged, but then the clitoris retracts under the hood and gets 50 percent shorter right before climaxing.
