Nestled away on a five-mile stretch of sand in the Bahamas is a safe haven for plus-size beach-goers to soak up the sun sans any inhibitions. Simply called The Resort, the Caribbean getaway opened two years ago and has gotten quite a bit of buzz lately - and it's easy to see why.
James King opened this picture-perfect slice of paradise after witnessing overweight people have a hard time enjoying themselves at other beachfront establishments. "On my first day working at a resort in Grenada, a young woman sat down in one of the loungers, and she went right through it, and everybody on the beach was laughing," he recalled to People. After learning that the woman was forced to pay $150 for "destruction of hotel property," King tried to convince the owners to invest in furniture that could accommodate heavier guests, but they ignored his request. So King took it upon himself to start from scratch and develop a place where curvy people could enjoy some good ol' R&R without worrying about such humiliating incidents.
After much trial and error with finding the perfect amenities to accommodate plus-size visitors, King opened up the doors of The Resort, which he calls a "sanctuary" for his guests. Many vacationers walk away from their stay at The Resort with a whole host of new friends. "They bond in a commonality," King told People. "It's people who have lived similar lives with the same issues, and all of a sudden most of the stigmas are gone, because nobody's staring at them. They just feel like they can identify. A lot of people who come have never met, but after just the first night, it's like they've known each other for years."
Small groups between two and 24 people can book a six-day stay at The Resort for a flat rate of $16,400 (which is pretty effing cheap if you can round up the maximum amount of people). That price includes all meals and drinks and access to the entire property, which includes a beach and pool. What a deal!
