To Live Longer, Just Keep Moving

Even for people who exercise regularly, juswalkingt walking around for a few minutes instead of sitting down can give you a few extra years. We know this because researchers at the University of Pennsylvania studied data from 3,000 people aged 50 to 79, who wore ultra-sensitive activity trackers, called accelerometers, for seven days. Science Daily reports that the researchers then tracked mortality for the next eight years. Ready? The envelope please…. The researchers found that the least active people were five times more likely to die during that period than the most active people and three times more likely than those in the middle range for activity. Yikes! The researchers aren’t offering us a specific amount a person needs to move to improve mortality, but they say they that even adding just 10 minutes of light activity a day could make a difference. Replacing 30 minutes of sedentary time with light or moderate-to-vigorous physical activity produced even better results.
