Bad News For The Paleo Diet Craze--New Report Says Eating Plan is Dangerous and Increases Obesity Risk

Paleo diet is a restrictive diet that omits bread, pasta, cereals, cheese, and dairy from your diet. The eating plan allows you to eat unlimited amounts of fruits, non-starchy vegetables, meats, and nuts. While the diet plan can help accelerate your weight loss, once you start adding more starches in your diet, a new report claims you will gain the weight back. The report labeled the diet plan as dangerous because it places you high risk for obesity and type II diabetes.

Nutrition and Diabetes reported a study where they fed mice a calorie controlled low carbohydrate and high-fat diet (similar to a Paleo diet) for nine weeks. After the study time, they found the mice actually gained weight and increased their risk for diabetes and obesity, especially in those mice who went back to their prior eating habits.

Apparently, the study concluded that the diet plan makes you fat, and increases the risk of diabetes and other insulin resistance disorders. Who knew that eating fruits, vegetables, nuts and animal protein was bad for you? The scientist realizes that mice and humans metabolize their foods differently; however, they felt the result of the study was alarming enough to deem it dangerous and to recommend no one follows the Paleo diet.

According to YahooNews, the mice were not exactly fed a Paleo diet, instead; they were given a low-carb and high-fat diet. Scientists believe that the similarity in the diet plans was close enough to prove that Paleo diet is bad for you, and there is no reason not to enjoy carbohydrates in your diet. They concluded that your body needs carbs, and they saw no benefit in restricting them.

What the Paleo study fails to mention they used only 17 male mice in the study. And that’s not all, New Zealand Obese (NZO) mice is a particular type of animal that has the predisposition to gain weight easily and have obesity issues. The reason the scientists used this particular mouse was because they wanted to see if the Paleo diet was suitable for those obese and pre-diabetic people can safely eat the diet plan. The results are flawed; however, the scientists still stand by their results-Paleo is dangerous and can cause significant health risk if followed long term.

The fact is people love talking about the newest diet trends and arguing why their diet is the better choice. The main issue most people have with the Paleo diet is the design flaws in the plan itself. For example, the diet claims that mostly all carbohydrates are bad for you. Not all carbs are bad for you; in fact, many are good for you. Your body needs carbs to survive. It would be better received by the nutritionists out there if Paleo would teach the difference between good and bad carbohydrates.

Pretty much every nutritionist will agree that rice and other grains are not necessary for any diet. The general public has not been taught the differences between carbs and they lump good and bad carbs in one pile. Paleo pushers often want you to believe that their diet is the only way not only to lose weight but keep it off. Generally speaking, if the diet plan calls for you to omit whole food groups, it probably is not a solid diet plan.
