Trying to lose weight with a low-fat diet? You may want to try something else. Researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston are convinced, after a comprehensive review of randomized clinical trials, that low-fat diets are no more effective than high-fat diets when it comes to taking the weight off and keeping it off. Science Blog
reports that researchers at the hospital analyzed data from 53 studies with a total of 68,128 participants that were designed to measure the difference in weight change between two groups that had a dietary intervention (low-fat or other diet). Ready? the envelope please….. The researchers found that trial participants across all intervention groups only managed to lose and keep off six pounds at one year or longer. They also found that, compared with low-fat diets, low-carbohydrate diets kept more weight off longer–more than two and a half pounds more after follow-up of at least one year. In fact, low-fat diets led to a greater weight loss only when compared to ‘usual diet’ in which participants did not change their eating habits.
