Selective Amnesia Erases Pain of Marathons

Why do people run marathons? More to the point, why to they run them again and again? Are runners particularly slow learners? Or do they forget the pain? Writing in the New York Times3414064391_b18b99d7b5-1, Gretchen Reynolds reports on a study in which Polish researchers stood at the finish line of a marathon and asked runners to rate their pain. The average, among 62 runners questioned, was 5.5 on a scale of zero to 10. Three or six months after the race, the researchers looked up the runners and asked the same question about pain at the end of the marathon. Most put it about 3 on the scale of zero to 10.
