The next time someone accuses you of hallucinating just tell them you’re one of the five percenters. That’s the percentage of the general population that, according to researchers at the University of Queensland, experiences hallucinations at some point in their lives. And no, it’s not a bad thing–most of the time. A University of Queensland news release reports that researchers surveyed more than 31,000 people in 19 countries, asking them about if they saw or heard things that other people did not. Among the five percent of those questioned who did see and hear things, there were more women than men, and a greater percentage of hallucinators came from wealthier countries. “People should be reassured that there isn’t anything necessarily wrong with them if it happens once or twice,” said lead researcher John McGrath, “but if people are having regular experiences we recommend that they seek help.”
