More than eight hours of sleep a night might not be really a good thing, according to new findings by scientists.
An report in the journal Neurology has concluded that too much sleep could in fact make you more susceptible to a stroke, but so could too little. And there are age dependencies, so you might not have to worry too much if you’re a little too attached to your bed.
While stroke diagnoses remain notoriously difficult, researchers claim their findings could help in predicting people most at risk.
It seems that eight hours of sleep is the key tipping point. Compared with people who took a regular six to eight hours of sleep every night, those lucky older people who said they slept for more than 8 hours were 46 percent more likely to suffer strokes in the next 10 years of their lives.
Combined sleep research from the University of Cambridge and the University of Warwick used data from a cancer study of almost 10,000 people in England. All participants were between the ages of 40 and 79 when they started being monitored in the 1990s, and on average they were tracked for nearly a decade.
Of the 9,692 volunteers, 346 suffered at least one stroke during the decade they were monitored, and a sleep pattern was found. This was that those who regularly slept for more than eight hours were at a significantly higher risk than those who took the average snooze time between six to eight hours.
Also more at risk of stroke than those inside the average snooze bracket were those who slept for less than six hours a night. That risk was judged to be 18 percent higher than for average sleepers, although it was also conceded that the difference was small enough to be a chance thing.
Other findings revealed that sleep duration and stroke risk were closer bed fellows for women than for men. While the connection was stronger for strokes that proved fatal.
You probably shouldn’t worry unduly about your sleeping duration if you’re under a certain age. Researchers found that those snoozing blissfully for longer were only an increased stroke risk above the age of 63. But if you’re not catching enough Zees, that can be an issue for younger folk.
The report’s data is almost enough to worry you into never sleeping again. If you’re concerned about the increased probability of insomnia after reading this story, you might be interested in this new sleep spray.
